Secretary of State's visit to China + HK

The Secretary of State has seen your submissions of

22 March and has commented as follows:

57

visit

то ни.

26/7

in Hong Kong on 2 April the Secretary of State does not wish to have drinks with Conservatives Abroad. If Mr Bickham or Mr Fraser thought it was a good idea, Mrs Hurd would be prepared to have a drink with them instead, to show willing. I should be grateful if you would liaise with the Special Advisers.

the Secretary of State would be happy for the Governor to invite Mr Heap and Mr Galsworthy to dinner on 2 April, if he wished to do so

up to him.

-

after his arrival on 2 April the Secretary of State would like a proper walk, please; Mrs Hurd would like to join in.

in Peking the Secretary of State would like to visit the old Legation compound (as Sir Alan Donald suggested at one stage) and the Summer Palace, if that were possible. He understands that we could not push the Chinese too hard with these requests, but let us see where they get to.

the Secretary of State sees no need for separate receptions to meet the Embassy staff and the British community. Unless HMA sees objection, the Secretary of State would like to merge these two parties.

back in Hong Kong at the end of the trip, the Secretary of State would like to get a bit of exercise before the long flight back. If time is too tight for a walk (and a stroll round Government House garden would not suffice) a swim would do the job nicely.
