UK-CANADA: CONSULTATION AND COOPERATION

NAD are preparing a paper examining UK-Canada relations and the prospects for extending and deepening the scope of the bilateral relationship. As part of this exercise, we are interested in the extent of existing contacts and consultations on subjects of mutual concern: East/West issues, drugs, AIDS, UN matters, defence, policy planning, economic matters, aid, the environment and so forth.
2. I would be grateful for a short run-down on the following:
(a) What consultations, at official or Ministerial level, already take place? Have these contacts increased/decreased in recent years?
(b) Are there areas where greater cooperation might be beneficial?
Is there scope for starting contacts in new areas?

How extensive is cooperation and exchange of information with Canada in multilateral organisations dealing with your subjects could it be improved?
