Hence the necessity, in my opinion, to find the way to

raise the level of consultations with China well beyond the current

procedure, as well as broaden the economic and commercial cooperation well beyond the agreement presently in force. This would enable us to

improve coordination of the Community's action, also vis-à-vis

matters which interest some partners more directly, such as the

status of Hong Kong and Macao, thus enhancing the bilateral dialogue.

The Chinese seemed to me interested and willing. In any

case I intend to raise the subject again on the occasion of the

General Affairs Council to be held in Luxembourg on 17 and 18 next.
