Section 1 Introduction

Scope

1. This briefing document is for the Design and Construction of new High Commission Offices in Nairobi.

The Offices should satisfy the functional needs of the users and at the same time project the appropriate image for the representation of the United Kingdom presence in Kenya.

Background

2. The United Kingdom has enjoyed a long involvement with East Africa from before the colonial period and culminating in the Independence in 1963. Today our friendship is still close and links in commerce and education are strong.

The present leased offices sit very uncomfortably on the upper floors of a commercial office block, Bruce House, in the centre of Nairobi. The provision of new BHC Offices is an opportunity to strengthen our association with Kenya and provide a shop window for British Architecture and Design.
