talks, and to provide continuity, it would be a good idea in my view to involve Counsel with a knowledge of Chinese law from the Civil Division in some of the research proposed above. The kind of person I have in mind is Miranda Ng who did an LL.M. at London University in 1989-90 and took papers in the 'Law and
Institutions of the PRC' and 'Foreign Trade and Investment Law In
East Asia'.

We should also try to ascertain the manner in which the
existing agreements of judicial assistance between the PRC and [i] France and [ii] Poland (with whom I have some good links) have been operating.

1 shall be in London (at SOAS) from 15 January until 3 February. I will probably be talking to the relevant FCO legal advisors on other matters. If this topic of mutual assistance is raised I shall say that we are working on the problem and will have more to say about the matter sometime in February.
