My reason is simple: I want to know what Hong Kong people want and expect from the U.K. (apart from passports) in the last 6-1/2 years of colonial administration. I should add that some in the U.K. will disagree with the sentiment quoted above, while others simply will not care. Some will argue that many Hong Kong Chinese have never felt loyalty to the Crown, that their loyalty will "forever be reserved exclusively for China"; while others will say that this is not the point. Then there is the view that amid everybody's complexities, the United Kingdom has its own responsibilities to the people of its last Asian colony; and for whatever it may be worth, that is the view with which I agree.
