ACCOUNT OF THE ARREST OF FOUR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

(This account was made after an interview with the four students)

DEMONSTRATION

The students said that they want to use the national celebration occassion to remind those banquet attendents. The four students went by themselves to the bustop opposite to the venue entrance because they did not want to miss the entry time. ARREST

On their way to the bustop, they were stopped by 2 police who questioned them and checked their identity card. The police then escorted them to the bustop. The four students then took out seven pictures about June Fourth massacre. Their position was facing the cars heading for the venue entrance. They held the pictures in front of them. They did not chant any slogans or distribute any pamphlets.

Not long, five to six police went over and warned them against showing up pictures at that place. The four did not respond to the warning. The police arrested them for "Breach of Peace". At 6:14pm, they were borught to the police duty office nearby. Half an hour later brought to Wanchai Police Station. When the police registered their case, the reason of arrest was changed to "Misbehaviour in Public Places". The police recorded their personal information, took their fingerprints and photographs. At 9pm, the four were released. Reason: inadequate proof.

POINTS TO MAKE

1) Showing up pictures at the bustop does not constitute

disturbance to others.

2) Reasons used by the police to arrest the four students were

different at different times.

3) Under detention, the four students demanded seeing lawyers but

was rejected.
