The Flag

8.1.
In the CD we quoted extracts from the UN
Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 and suggested
that: -
"16.3
Following the creation of a
separate and autonomous Hong Kong register, it
would be appropriate for ships on the Hong
Kong Register to be identifiable as such.
Arrangements may thus need to be introduced
whereby a flag or flags should indicate both
the nationality of the ship and the fact that
it is on the Hong Kong Register."

By and large the few comments received on this topic
agreed that Hong Kong registered ships should have a
distinctive flag and that it should be internationally
recognised before and after 1997.

The Present Position
8.2.
The rules governing the flag which may be
flown by British vessels on the existing Hong Kong
Register are contained in Colonial Regulations.
Regulation 125 in Chapter VI of Part II says:-
