BRITAIN'S ECONOMIC STAKE IN HONG KONG

British visible exports to Hong Kong total more than £1

billion a year.

- Hong Kong is Britain's second largest Far East market,

after Japan.

- The book value of British direct net investment in Hong

Kong amounted to £1.9 billion in 1987, compared to

£1.5 billion in 1984.

- More than 1,000 Hong Kong companies have British

involvement through direct control, investment or

management. The gross stock market value of these companies

is about £20 billion.

- Britain portfolio investment in Hong Kong is some 30% of

the total market.

Britain is the fourth largest investor in Hong Kong's

manufacturing industries, after the United States, Japan and

China. But Britain has traditionally always been much more prominent in the services sector, which now accounts for

some 75% of Hong Kong's GDP.

There are 20 British banks doing business in Hong Kong.

In 1989 these banks and deposit taking institutions held

7.6% of Hong Kong's total deposits.

There are also 38 British insurance companies, 25 British

securities dealers and 9 British commodity dealers in Hong

Kong.
