Consumer price indices shall be

computed in order to measure variationg over time in the prices of 1 temo representative of the consumption patterns of significant population groups or of the total population.

The c.rent CPI series published in Hong Kong use the period October 1984 to September 1985 au base, which is the period when

last HES Wal conducted. Based On the similarity of expenditure patterns of the households covered in the HES, three different CP15, namely CPI(A), CPI(B) and Hang Seng CPI. were demarcated a6 referring to households spending between HK$2,000 and HK$6,499, HK$6,500 and FIK $9,999, and K$10,000 and HK$24,999 a month respectively in 1984/85. Each OPI series measures the change in the cost of a constant baske: of goods and services commonly purchased by the corresponding Index population in a specified time period.

Thes: goode and Bervices are organized into 912 items, 254 sub-groups, then 94 groups and finally 9 sections. The 912 1 teme are selected with reference to the results of the 1984/85 HS and are representative of the consumption patterns of the respective population groups covered by the index. The price data of the pre-selected commodity/service itemo are collected by personal visits or telephone enquiries from different types of retail outlets throughout the territory, except the remote areas. For each commodity item, the price data in respect of those brands which are relatively more popular ar: collected.
