Summary of briefing
2. Chengde, being one of the ten important scenic cities in
China, was famous for its
summer palace and other
historical buildings.
It
had a population of 850,000
amongst which only around 200,000 lived in the urban
area.
3. Tourism was Chengde's most important industry. other
were relatively undeveloped. Efforts had
industries
been put into
increasing investment with a view to
enhancing tourism in recent years. However, the lack of
finance was the major impediment to quicker progress.
4. The
provincial government paid a lot of attention to
improving and developing the medical, educational and
welfare systems. There were 69 hospitals in Chengde and
around 5,900 citizens were in health care related
