We tried to prompt wang on his views on the likely
outcome of the coming LegCo election. In response Wang
said that the Chinese Government shared HKG's wish to see a
successful election with a high voter turn-out rate.
Regarding demands from certain pressure groups to increase
the proportion of directly elected members in LegCo should

that acceding to these demands would require an amendment
to the Basic Law. Changes to the Basic Law before 1997
were not acceptable nor feasible.
