I paid a short familiarisation visit to Peking earlier
this month before continuing on to Weifang for the Eric Liddell
Foundation Dedication Ceremony. The Embassy organised for me a
varied and interesting programme, a copy of which I attach. In addition to the calls in the programme, I also asked for one on
the Guangdong Provincial Office in Peking. This was turned
down.

The "free" evening of June 4 was spent with Mr. Doyle,
Assistant Defence Attache and Mr. Brooking, cruising the
university areas in the Embassy Land Rover. There was a
considerable (if not always overt) security presence, but no signs of any incidents.
3.
With Visa Section I discussed ways of flagging up in
advance potentially interesting visits to HK, particularly Provincial leaders. They already run such a system for visits
to the UK, and in future will mark on the visa telegrams any
officials that they consider may be of interest (e.g.
Governors, Mayors, Ministers or their deputies). This will not be foolproof and we will continue to scan visa applications,
but it should give us more notice of such visits. The section
raised with me one or two points which I will pass to D of Imm.
4.
I accompanied Ms. MŌrilla Logan from FED on a call on Mr. Zhao Kuangwei, Deputy Director of the State Council Bureau of Religious Affairs. This was by way of general
familiarisation, but in view of the Eric Liddell Foundation and
possible sensitivities attached to Liddell's role as a
missionary it was of personal interest. We were fed the standard "freedom of religion" line, but took the opportunity
to ask some awkward questions.
