be connected to Beijing by a major highway, most of which is already complete (we travelled along it to Tianjin city).
3. Overall, we found the visit very illuminating, and it certainly makes sense to go beyond those parts of China where Hong Kong's presence is most obvious. The Industry Department has made a number of these visits in the last four years, and most of the members of this delegation were veterans of previous visits, whose impressions of Beijing and Tianjin were all the more valuable because of their experience of other regions of China. It was made very clear to us by both the Beijing and Tianjin authorities that, having thoroughly covered the south China coast from Guangdong up to Shanghai in previous visits, and having now seen Tianjin, we should complete our impression of China's coastal development by seeing Dalian and Qingdao. I intend to visit Guangdong later in the year (we last visited in November 1990 so another visit is overdue), but would certainly like to fit in these northern Chinese ports as soon as possible, before some of the more experienced members of my team are posted elsewhere.
