For the first nine months of 1991, Hong Kong
coach operators carried a total of 1.29 million passengers
across
the border.
It is estimated that the coach
passenger traffic will increase by about 19% p.a. over the
next five years, reaching 4.5 million by 1996.
The Chinese Proposal

1991,
cross-border
transport meeting held on
the Guangdong authorities sought a new and
separate quota to allow 100 PRC left-hand-drive passenger
coaches to enter Hong Kong. In support, they said that the
interior parts of Guangdong were not adequately served by
the existing operators mainly because of the unwillingness
Hong Kong drivers to ply long-distance routes. A change
of driver (and possibly of vehicle) in Shenzhen would help,

passengers.
Furthermore,
inconvenience
and delay to
a cross-border coach service
operated by PRC operators would assist in opening up the
interior parts of Guangdong for development.
