In the first half of 1991, Guangdong's total exports
amounted to US$5.6 billion, representing an increase of 18%
in money terms compared with the same period in 1990.
Exports by the conventional foreign trade corporations
increased less rapidly, by 11% to US$3.3 billion. Exports
by foreign-funded enterprises and by processing units amounted to US$1.9 billion and US$0.3 billion, representing increases of 31% and 34% respectively. These two types of
industrial undertakings together accounted for 40.8% of
Guangdong's total exports in the first half of 1991.

The economy of Shenzhen City was even more buoyant than that of the Guangdong Province in general but
growth rate of exports was slower. The following table
highlights the economic performance of Guangdong and
Shenzhen in the first half of 1991, in comparison with that
for the country as a whole:
(30) In 1990 foreign-funded enterprises accounted for 20% of Guangdong's gross industrial output, while it was only 3% for the country as a whole. In Shenzhen City, the share of foreign-funded enterprises in the total industrial output was even higher, at 69.2% in the first half of 1991.
