each. Four possible routes of supply are proposed:
i)
one vessel to be built at FBM's yard at Cowes, Isle
of Wight, the rest under licence in Taiwan;
ii)
all the boats to be built under licence in Taiwan;
iii)
all the boats to be built under licence in the USA by
Marinette Marine, Wisconsin;

iv)
all the boats to be built in Taiwan under a licence
administered by the US company.
Strong competition is expected from US shipyards.

This application is for approval to enter into a cooperation agreement with a French shipyard, Le Roux and Lotz, to enable the French shipyard to submit a tender to build 24 Peacock class patrol boats (60m, 660 tonne) in Taiwan, with a further six boats being built in France.
c) Swan Hunter (Singapore)
Far Eastern Department were approached at the end of last year by a defence consultant working for Swan Hunter, seeking informal guidance on whether approval would be likely for Swan Hunter (Singapore) to transfer technology to Taiwan for coastal policing boats in the 100-500 ton class. This is potentially a very large order.
The Taiwan coastguard was recently set up under the control of the Ministry of Finance, which is also responsible for the Customs Administration. In the past, coastguard duties were apparently shared between the navy and the police. The new coastguard was set
