Problem

1. A number of export licence and AWP applications have been

submitted seeking approval to export coastal patrol boats in the

range of 100-600 tonnes to the Taiwan Coastguard. Should we

approve?

Recommendation

2. I recommend that we should continue to apply more liberal guidelines where the end-user of the equipment is the coastguard rather than the navy, while refusing applications for exports of boats that are clearly capable of carrying heavy armament. HKD, the Embassy in Peking and the Political Adviser in Hong Kong are

content.

This application is for approval to export 33m (92 tonne)
