U.S. FIRST TO NEGOTIATE
AIR SERVICES AGREEMENT WITH MACAU
The United States is the first country with which Macau will negotiate an air services agreement. Formal discussions begin in Washington June 26-27. Macau is building a new international airport currently projected to open in 1994. Work on the main terminal landfill is nearing completion. With U.S. airlines already planning their operations and investments in East Asia for the rest of the decade, officials from both Macau and the United States believe now is the right time to begin negotiations.
U.S. officials are hopeful of a wide-ranging agreement which would allow both U.S. passenger and cargo airlines the flexibility to serve many points in the region as well as to play a key role in Macau's ambitious, infrastructure development plans. Macau's airport has sparked considerable interest among American companies in the aviation field. Many are interested in offering equipment or bidding on construction of facilities like the passenger and cargo terminals.
A U.S. Commerce Department-led trade mission will visit Macau as well as Hong Kong in November of this year. U.S. and Macau officials have already carried on informal discussions regarding technical cooperation in the areas of regulation-drafting and safety.
