I am writing about the recent actions in Hong Kong's Legislative Council concerning the death penalty. It was heartening to learn that a motion calling for abolition of the death penalty was passed with a large majority.

As capital punishment in my own country is being gradually wid- ened to include non-violent crimes, I can tell you that your allusion to the death penalty as a "slippery slope" is not a frivolous portray-

al.

Films I have seen of mobs in Florida gathering to cheer, party, and drink at executions would, I think, convince your colleagues in government that the socially poisonous practice of capital punishment must never return to Hong Kong.

Thank you for your efforts on behalf of this important issue.

Yours sincerely,

Elizabeth Clem
