SCMP INTERVIEW
1. Objectives for visit
Continuing improvement in UK/Chinese relations following
Prime Minister's visit. Also chance to see other parts of
China, including British commercial activities, in a way not possible on a short visit. Visits to Guangdong and Shenzhen important to understanding implications for Hong Kong of development of Southern China.
-
Expect discussions in Peking to focus on four areas:
(i)
bilateral relations (political, commercial, human
rights);
(ii)
international issues (arms control, United
Nations);
(iii) regional issues (Cambodia, Vietnam, Korea);
(iv) Hong Kong issues.
2. Why visit China only now (SCMP leader)?
Your leader neglects other developments in UK/China
relations. Soon after arriving I received Vice Foreign Minister Tian in this country. Agreed then that Foreign
Secretary would visit China April 1991. Then
Prime Minister's visit September 1991 and Zou Jiahua here
October 1991.
