NEWSPAPER ARCHIVE RELATING TO HONG KONG

1. You ask, in your minute of 13 May, about a possible UK home for an archive of Hong Kong and British newspaper cuttings from the years 1982-91 relating to the future of Hong Kong. It is difficult to advise without having some idea of the physical size and content value of this archive, and the question of whether payment is required is obviously

crucial.

2.

Assuming the archive is reasonably substantial, I would suggest an academic institution with an interest in modern

Chinese studies would be the best bet. We have discussed

this briefly with RAD, who have made the following

suggestions:

(i) The Centre for Modern Chinese Studies at Oxford

(Belsyre Court, 57 Woodstock Road, Oxford OX2 6FA) where an academic called Steve Tsang is engaged on a project relating

to modern Hong Kong.

(ii) The Contemporary China Institute at SOAS in London. The Director, Bob Ash, is apparently interested in getting a research project on Hong Kong off the ground.
