In answer to a general question, only Mr Hartigan and Mr Wrangham admitted to having made money in China. Mr Barlow said that he knew of a number of British companies in China that were now pulling out. Mr Hartigan argued that Britain should make use of its role in Hong Kong to curry commercial favour with China.

All agreed that Korea was a very difficult market to penetrate. Mr Hartigan said that of four joint ventures, three had failed through lack of cooperation from the Koreans. Mr Barlow argued that Korea was nevertheless a vital market. It was the only country in the region (with the exception of Japan) that had a large domestic market and major conglomerates that were now expanding overseas.
