Our concern is that as the years have gone by this issue has become of increased seriousness as the sterling value of these Hong Kong pensions has fallen. Our Hong Kong pensioner members are seeking redress for a wrong which is being inflicted upon them. (I was recently looking at the situation of a pensioner, the sterling value of his basic pension is now 62% of its value when he retired in 1984). For the past year (and indeed for even longer) Ministers' letters, culminating in the Earl of Caithness's assurance that he would look into these issues as a matter of priority, have assured us that these matters are under active consideration. It is thus aggrieving for these pensioners, who are running out of patience not to mention funds, now to be told that they must 'bear with you for some time to come'.
I hope that you will be pressing the Hong Kong Government'to come forward, as a matter of urgency, with its proposals, and then for them to be given priority in consideration as promised by the Earl of Caithness.
Yours sincerely
