LETTERS FROM EX HONG KONG CIVIL SERVANTS: HMOCS PENSIONS AND
SUPPLEMENTARY PENSION FOR OVERSEAS SERVICE (SPOS)
Problem
1.
Lord Caithness has received two letters from retired
Hong Kong members of HMOCS about the depreciating value of their pensions and unsatisfactory SPOS arrangements.
Recommendation
2. I recommend a Departmental reply be sent to these
letters along the lines of the attached draft.

3. As Lord Caithness is aware, Hong Kong HMOCS pensioners
who have retired to this country have become increasingly
concerned about the erosion in the value of their pensions,
as a result of the depreciation of the Hong Kong dollar
against sterling. These concerns have become more acute in
recent months, following the sharp fall in value of the US
dollar (to which the Hong Kong dollar is linked) and
sterling's entry into the Exchange Rate Mechanism. The rate has fallen by about 25% in the past year.
4.
HMOCS pensioners' feelings were further aroused by a
letter which Mr Maude wrote to Mrs Edwina Currie which
