air transport engineering; however, allied disciplines may be acceptable to the Ministry of Defence. Alternatively Part 2 of the Engineering Council examination in a suitable pattern of subjects may be acceptable. Certain degree courses at the Royal Military College of Science and at City and Salford Universities are particularly relevant to the work of the RAF Engineer Branch and the RAF has made special arrangements to sponsor university cadets undertaking these courses. See Sections IV, V and VII for further details and other conditions of entry and service for RAF university cadets in the Engineer Branch.

b. Education Specialization of the Administrative Branch-See Sections VI and VII.

c. Catering Specialization of the Administrative Branch-Cadetships are available to male or female applicants who have obtained or expect to obtain a place at university, polytechnic or college in the UK for a three or four year full-time degree course in catering studies.

Nationality and Residence Requirements

51. For entry into the RAF you must satisfy the authorities that:

a. At all times since birth you have been a Commonwealth citizen or a citizen of the Republic of Ireland.

b. You were born in a country which is (or then was) within the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland.

c. Each of your parents was born in a country which is (or then was) within the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland and is (or was at death) a Commonwealth citizen or a citizen of the Republic of Ireland and is or has been one or the other at all times since birth.

52. The term 'Commonwealth citizen' includes: a British citizen; a British Dependent Territory citizen; a British overseas citizen; a British subject under the British Nationality Act (1981); a citizen of an independent Commonwealth country.

53. A waiver of the requirements of paragraph 51 for those who do not meet its conditions may be granted by the Secretary of State for Defence in excep- tional circumstances to candidates who are Commonwealth citizens, British Protected Persons or citizens of the Republic of Ireland at the time of their application. An application for this dispensation will be made by the Careers Information Office on receipt of the application for service.

54. Candidates whether or not they are of UK origin, should normally have resided in the UK for a minimum of five years immediately preceding their application. In certain circumstances, particularly where an applicant is of UK origin, a shorter period of residence may be accepted and a waiver of part of the residence requirement may be granted provided that evidence of assimi- lation into the UK can be demonstrated.
