LABOUR PARTY POLICY AND HONG KONG
1. Your minute underneath. I do not think it would be appropriate for you to approach the Labour Party directly. To provide information, if requested, is one thing. To initiate an approach, designed to cast doubt on some aspects of their policy, is another.
2.
All we can do is look for any opportunities which may naturally occur. I shall watch for these but none of us may have such opportunities in the timescale which is desirable.
3.
As I recall, the Governor is seeing Mr Kaufman and Labour MPs during his visit here later this month. This will be the best opportunity to put across information about some of the issues which the Labour Party are considering. Of course, Sir David Wilson will have difficulty in dealing with views about a future Governor.
4. I think it would be worthwhile bringing the press cutting to the attention of Lord Caithness and the Secretary of State as an indication of developing Labour Party policy on Hong Kong.
