Baggage Reclaim
Located in a large hall with high ceilings, 16 baggage claim devices are oriented parallel with passenger flow and allow ample space for movement of crowds and baggage carts.
The airlines' baggage service offices, which serve passengers with delayed, lost or damaged baggage, are located in the centre of the area and around the perimeter of the hall. Claim areas for oversize baggage are also situated in the centre of the terminal, close to customs.
Customs
Customs is located between the baggage reclaim hall and the Arrivals Hall. The 76 inspection positions are located parallel to passenger flow, in two separate rows along the baggage reclaim area, providing passengers with a short walk to the nearest customs position.
Arrivals Hall
The Arrivals Hall is the gateway to Hong Kong. It includes a reception area, provides traveller information and services and is a transition venue to all landside transportation. The Hall is envisaged as a large, dramatic space with a high ceiling, several light wells open to the Check-in Hall above and the rail platform directly ahead. Located at the front of the terminal, the area enjoys plentiful natural lighting. Concession spaces for traveller information and sevices are located along the perimeter of the Hall.
The rail platform serving Arrivals is located at the same level in the middle of the Hall, along the front of the terminal. The train, ticket purchase areas and passengers waiting on the platform are visible from the Arrival Hall. The curbside, serving taxis and buses is located at the end of the Hall, while curbside for private cars and hotel limousines is located one level down along the front of the terminal. Access to this area is provided by banks of escalators as well as lifts for the handicapped and passengers with heavy baggage.
Transfer/Transit
For passengers transferring between aircraft within the airport, two transfer lounges are located in the concourse and provide processing and security screening. After receiving a new boarding pass, passengers proceed through security checkpoints. They may then proceed up the escalators to the Departure level and make their way to the gate at their leisure. Day hotels and rental shower areas may eventually be located in these lounges for passenger comfort and convenience.
Passengers who have to leave the plane for cleaning or other reasons, but who then continue on in the same aircraft, will proceed to the Arrivals mezzanine with other passengers. They will then be directed to a transit lounge. Once through the security screening in the transit lounge, escalators lead to the Departures level and access to the concession. These passengers will then return to the appropriate boarding lounge.
11. Additional Issues
Flexibility and Expansion Capability
The passenger terminal complex is planned to accommodate 87 million passengers a year when fully completed. This capacity will be reached in carefully planned and monitored stages. The Terminal Building at opening day will meet the projected 2002 demand of 33 million passengers a year. Incremental expansion will bring the capacity of the initial phase of development to 45 million or more and when additional demands dictate, Phase Two, can be constructed to reach the 2040 projected capacity of 87 million passengers a year. Phase Two consists of a satellite processing terminal and satellite concourse, connected via the people mover.
