Memorandum of Understanding on Airport and Related Questions (1)
The left-wing New Evening Post reported in a front-page splash. that HK issues including the new airport project had been resolved with high-level participation and an agreement would be announced at 4 pm today. The report said that Prime Minister John Major would make some remarks in public on the agreement and visit China at the invitation of the Chinese authorities.
Radio 7 reported at 17.45 hrs that many Legco members were satisfied with the agreement reached on the airprt project by Britain and China. The station quoted Legco member Prof Poon Chung-kwong as saying that the Exco had unanimously agreed on the memorandum and that several Legco members were of the opinion that the memorandum was not expected to have any effect on HK's administrative autonomy before 1997. Another Legco member, Tam Yiu-chung, described the agreement as "fair and reasonable", adding that it was in line with the Sino-British Joint Declaration.
