CALL BY MR MALWYN JONES (DIRECTOR OF BALFOUR BEATTY) ON

1. Mr Jones said that the purpose of his call was to explain Balfour Beatty's position with regard to the airport platform contract, coupled with a specific request for

information about Hong Kong Government policy on the award

of contracts for PADS.

Balfour Beatty are leading one of the six groups which have pre-qualified for the airport platform contract and their group is subdivided into two further groups one

dealing with the "dry" and the other with the "wet" work eg

dredging. Balfour Beatty have decided to associate

themselves with CITIC following approach by CITIC to Sir

Bob Davidson their new Chief Executive and Chairman.

Balfour Beatty's view was that it would be beneficial to

have a Chinese group member, and there might be other benefits eg financing. They had had preliminary discussions with CITIC about financing and meetings with the Bank of

China were scheduled. CITIC had given an indication to

Balfour Beatty that they would probably join the group if
