1. Further to my minute to Miss Marsden, as I have already told you, both the Chinese Ambassador and his Minister also mentioned to me that they had been encouraged by the positive tone of the remarks of Zhou Nan in a meeting that he had had in the last couple of days with Lord Maclehose and Lady Dunn. I said to them that I had been unaware of such a meeting. I added to Mr Yu (innocently) that since Lord Maclehose was not a Government official it was quite likely that we might not get a record of this discussion. It would therefore be very helpful if the Chinese Embassy could make available their own record since they clearly felt that it was a positive development. Mr Yu was, as would expect, non-committal.

2. Mr Lin (who is the Embassy Hong Kong expert) telephoned me this morning on another matter and I took the opportunity of mentioning my request to Mr Yu. Mr Lin undertook to have a word with Mr Yu and see what could be done.
3. A try-on by me. But one never knows!
