companies seeking to penetrate the Asian market, and raise consumer awareness of new Hong Kong brand- names. The new fairs included the New Home Electrical Appliances Show, the Leisure & Hobby Expo, the Hong Kong International Book Fair and an Education & Careers Expo.

In co-operation with Lloyd's of London Press Limited of the UK, the Council co-organised APEX '91, an exhibition. and conference on airport, port and transportation development. The event's central theme was infrastructural development in the Asia-Pacific region as a whole, but served also to draw further attention to Hong Kong's position as an international shipping and business centre.

As well as organising its own fairs, the TDC continued to support the private exhibition industry by taking part in privately organised trade events. These included the Interna- tional Fair Leather, CeNIT Asia, the Hong Kong Industrial Trade Fair, the Hong Kong Furniture, Lighting & Housewares Fair, Interstoff Asia and the Hong Kong International Fur Fair.

The custom-built Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, which is owned by the TDC, was the venue for most of the major trade fair events held in the territory during the year. The high demand for its facilities has already generated the idea of increasing its capacity.

In response to indications that the Centre may possibly be expanded, within the context of the Hong Kong Government's provisional overall strategy for further reclamation along the shore of Central and Wanchai, the Council's Steering Committee has commissioned a series of preliminary studies to identify the most appropriate scale of new facilities.

During the year, the Executive consulted regularly with Hong Kong's leading industries through the Council's six industrial advisory committees, covering fashion, toys, watches & clocks, jewellery, electronics and fur garments. The committees ac- tively advised on and supported the TDC's promotions, both locally and overseas.
