Hong Kong's trade with Canada totalled HK$14.6 billion in 1990 and, in spite of economic slowdown, the country is a significant market for the territory. In particular, trade with British Columbia has grown in recent years and Vancouver has the potential to become a strategic gateway between Hong Kong and North America.
In a store promotion staged in May with Eaton's Department Store in Vancouver, a wide range of Hong Kong products, interspersed with numerous cultural activities, were featured in a specially designed "Hong Kong Street". Hong Kong brand-name products were also highlighted and many of the goods on display were sold out, with woollen knitwear and food items being the most popular. Consumer traffic and sales in the store were boosted by six percent during the two week event. A gala fashion show and daily shows featuring the latest Hong Kong designer collections were well received.
Hong Kong products were also displayed in a special exhibition mounted at the Aberdeen Centre in Richmond, and on the other side of the country in Toronto, a central product display was mounted at the Canadian High Technology Show.
