Exploring opportunities for a

Hong Kong's total trade with ASEAN rose by 20% in 1990, reflecting the member countries' increasing importance as trad- ing partners. Total exports to Singapore rose by 21% to more than HK$20 billion, indicating the Republic's significance as a market and as a conduit for trade with Malaysia and Indonesia.

During the year, the Council boosted its promotional efforts in the ASEAN region to take advantage of increasing trade and business prospects, particularly in Singa- pore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

In Singapore, the TDC staged a three- week promotion from September 15 to October 7 at the Metro Paragon Department Store to focus attention on Hong Kong brand names and designer labels. A spectacular Gala Fashion Show was held at the Mandarin Oriental,

Singapore to coincide with the event. The show was hosted by the Council's Chairman, Baroness Dunn, who met with Singaporean Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, during her visit, to discuss matters of mutual economic interest.

Hong Kong goods were also on display at] the Singapore International Trade Fair where participation by local manufacturers] and suppliers was organised by the Council in conjunction with the Chinese Manufac turers' Association of Hong Kong.

Closer economic ties and co-operation be tween Hong Kong and Singapore was the theme of a high level seminar organised jointly with the Singapore Economic Development Board. The seminar, which] was held in August 1990, was attended by over 200 senior executives of leading companies in Singapore. Hong Kong| speakers included Mr John Chan, Secretary!
