Alongside the Japanese Government's contribution to the
cultural infrastructure in Hong Kong, individual Japanese compa-
nies which have taken root with Hong Kong society also conduct
cultural events. Companies such as Epson, JAL, Sony, NEC, Daiichi
Kangyo Bank, Daiwa Bank, Jusco, and Yaohan, amongst others, have
helped to establish such programmes as scholarship programmes for
young people in Hong Kong; whilst also holding or supporting
sporting occasions, as well as providing financial assistance for
charity organisations and educational establishments in Hong
Kong.
Allied to this, I would like to
mention various
activities performed by the Hong Kong Japanese Club. Like any
other clubs of foreign communities in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Japanese Club as the representative body for the Japanese commu- nity in the Territory, aims at contributing to Hong Kong's commu- nity through cultural and charitable activities; such

Cultural exchanges, especially when carried out at many different levels, and for many different purposes, help to both widen as well as deepen our mutual understanding, and I believe that expanded Japanese contributions in this area will certainly serve to strengthen our relationship yet further.
