links which are steadily increasing with the Pacific Rim, with the
west coast of Canada and the United States. We are talking about
increasing cooperation, as provided for in the Joint Declaration,
between the British and Chinese governments as we try to move into
and beyond 1997 preserving the success of Hong Kong as an
economic, financial and trading centre.
I hope you will feel that this prospect coolly analysed, properly
considered, is one of the brightest open for British investment.
We are not talking about a sunset, we are talking about a prospect
for continued sunshine. Those who have counted Hong Kong out in
the past have been proved wrong, I believe they will be wrong
again and certainly we will do our utmost as the British
government to work for the continued prosperity of Hong Kong and
the continued confidence of the world in Hong Kong.
