August Paper for the Secretary of State

Private Office will be closed next week, 12 - 16 August. PS/Mr Lennox-Boyd will be handling all papers for No 10, in consultation as necessary with you. The Secretary of State returns to the UK on Thursday 15 August. The PUS has agreed to act as a filter next week of any requests to contact the Secretary of State on leave. Simon Gass will re-open the Private Office on Monday 19 August.

On present plans, the Secretary of State will not return to the office before his 1 September departure with the Prime Minister for Hong Kong and Peking. In the last two weeks of August, it is possible (though not certain) that the Secretary of State wil wish to see some papers to bring him up to speed on the main dossiers. Subject to confirmation with the Secretary of State by Simon Gass on 19 August, boxes will be sent to Devon for the Secretary of State closing at 1400 on Wednesday 21 August and Tuesday 27 August. These boxes will be limited to essential reading and short round ups on selected subjects. Candidates for such round ups, on which departments may wish to set work in hand next week, are:
