Private Secretary
REQUEST FOR INTERVIEW BY JOHN NEWHOUSE
1. John Newhouse, who is a well regarded American journalist, will be visiting the United Kingdom between
28 May and 1 June. He has requested an interview with the Secretary of State for use in his "Diplomatic Round" feature in the New Yorker. He is interested in discussing developments in Europe post Gulf and in the light of the
IGCS.
2.
He has also requested an interview for the "World Monitor" programme which is sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor on a cable network (although only if, as expected, he is turned down by the Prime Minister's Office!) He interviewed the Secretary of State for the programme in New York during the UNGA and did not disgrace himself.
3.
I have discussed this with Washington who believe that it would be worth doing if the Secretary of State could find the time, although they would not wish to press it beyond that. North America Department agree. As the Secretary of State expects to be on leave during this week and the bid is only of marginal importance, I assume that he will not wish
to do so.
Decline?
