It is my great pleasure to have acknowledged your letter dated
Feb(21) and thank you very much for the background materials of related
senators and representatives in the American Congress attached to your
letter.
Although some
improvements have been made in Sino-American
relations since the beginning of this year, China's MEN status is still
facing complicated situations. In my view, whether China's MFN status
issue can
be solved smoothly and properly will not only hinder the
development of Sino-American relations but also jeopardize the economic
interests of China's mainland and Hong Kong.
I have noted with satisfaction that Hong kong Administration
did a lot of effective work last year for the unconditionaly extension
