1. The first shots in this year's Congressional battle on MFN renewal have been fired.

On their return from China two American Congressmen (Smith (R-New Jersey), and Wolf (R-Virginia)) gave a press conference in which they outlined their criticism of China's human rights performance. They said they had focused, in their meetings in China, on three major areas:

(a) political prisoners: they presented Li Peng with a list of cases of pro-democracy activists still in prison;
