Background
1.
The UK Garrison Brunei comprises a Gurkha Infantry Battalion
group that is stationed in Brunei Darussalam as a result of an "Exchange of Notes" between HM The Sultan of Brunei's Government and
HMG. The battalion group remains an integral part of the British Army. The agreement additionally allows for the UK Garrison Brunei
to provide administrative and logistic support to other British Forces
in Brunei. The full costs associated with the stationing of the
battalion and its supporting elements are met by HM The Sultan of
Brunei's Government in accordance with the Exchange of Notes.
2. The UK Garrison Brunei is under full command of CBF Hong Kong
(4); however, the British High Commissioner is responsible, subject
to the direction of HMG, for decisions of policy on the operational
deployment of UK Forces in Brunei. In the event that military action
is required, CDS will direct how operational command and control will
be exercised. This will normally be in one of 3 ways:
a.
Directly by CDS.
b. Through CBF Hong Kong.
c.
Through another nominated Commander.
3. CBF has delegated to Commander 48 Gurkha Infantry Brigade responsibility for the operational effectiveness and training of the resident infantry battalion in Brunei.
Brunei. Commander Brunei Garrison
reports direct to HQ BFHK on all matters relating to Brunei Garrison,
except the operational effectiveness of the resident infantry
battalion. The Deputy Commander BFHK, in his role as Commander
