10. The brutal repression of the democracy movement in the Peoples Republic in June 1989 dented confidence in Hong Kong severely. From mid-May 1989 a number of mass rallies had taken place in support of the democratic activists in China. These demonstrations were also

tinged with national feelings of sympathy and solidarity with the

Chinese people. After the events in Tiananmen Square, the demonstrators turned to fierce criticism of the Chinese leadership. This unprecedented mobilisation of the Hong Kong population in a
