In addition, Endurance is an important part of our policy towards Antarctica where virtually all our territory is claimed also by Chile and Argentina. Endurance is not only a manifestation of our sovereignty over part of Antarctica, but also fulfils important scientific duties which the environmental lobby will want
to keep.
5. I hope therefore that you will agree not to announce
the withdrawal of Endurance before 24 June. I suggest, instead, that we agree to keep Endurance, initially for another season, until OPD have been able to look at all
the issues.
6. I am copying this minute to the Prime Minister, the Chief Secretary, the Environment Secretary and to
Sir Robin Butler.
