BATTALION

HONG KONG GARRISON: WITHDRAWAL OF THE FIRST BATTALION

1.

Please refer to Mr Burn's letter of 21 June to Mr Bevan about the withdrawal of the First Battalion and our telephone conversation of today.

2. We agreed that if the public announcement about the withdrawal is timed to coincide with the announcement about the future of the Gurkhas, then the Nepalese would be informed one day in advance of this. Our Ambassador in Kathmandu will also require an additional 2 to 3 days notice to give him time to secure appointments (see Martin Williams' letter of 14 June to Ian Andrews, R P Army). But if the announcement about the future of the Gurkhas is deferred, and the announcement about the withdrawal of the First Battalion is made in advance of this, then the Nepalese would be informed at the same time as the Chinese.
