Problem
1. We owe the Defence Secretary a reply to his minute of 10
June.
Recommendation
2.
I recommend that the Secretary of State sends the
Defence Secretary a holding reply along the lines of the
attached draft, in order to ensure that the MOD do not pre-empt the further work on the question of our defence responsibilities for our dependent territories which the Secretary of State has commissioned. NPDD CONCUR.
Background
3.
During his meeting with the Secretary of State on 26 June, the Governor made a powerful case for the retention of the patrol craft on military as well as wider political grounds. The MOD, however, are adamant that they will not
retain the craft unless they can be relieved of the
additional costs of doing so.
