PERMANENT GARRISONS
1 The Falkland Islands, South
Georgia, South Sandwich Islands, British Antarctic Territory
FORCE DEPLOYMENT
2,000 strong garrison on Falkland Islands, comprising a resident infantry company; RE Field Squadron; a destroyer /frigate; an offshore patrol vessel; a submarine; 4 Phantoms; 2 Hercules;
2 Chinooks; 2 Sea Kings; Rapier fire units and Early Warning Radars.
Small 40 strong garrison on South Georgia.
HMS Endurance patrols the South Atlantic and Antarctic in the waters around our territories for 3 months each year during the austral summer
PROPOSED CHANGES
Not aware of any specific proposal to reduce our presence.
MOD wish to dispose of HMS Endurance at a saving of flm pa up to 1995 when the ship would be due for replacement thus saving a further MOD estimated £70m in replacement costs.
