BACKGROUND
1. The Hong Kong Garrison contains units / establishments from all three Services, together with a sizeable local military and civilian workforce. It consists of:

Three Peacock Class Patrol Craft;
One UK Infantry Battalion;
Three Gurkha Battalions;
One Squadron of AAC Scout helicopters;
One Squadron of RAF Wessex helicopters; and
The HK Military Service Corps.
The current establishment
is in the region of 12,000
personnel. This can be broken down as follows:
Navy Army RAF

8,200 including 5,000 Gurkhas;

Civilian 3,040 including 2,900 LECS.
AIM
3. Hong Kong will remain a British Territory until 1 July 1997, and the intention is for the military to retain a presence until the end. Consideration needs to be
be given, therefore, to the optimum way of providing the necessary support during the run-down period. Following a visit to the Territory by Man S(Org) in February 1991, DCDS (C) has decided to explore further the possibility of arranging a multi-activity contract to cover a number of the support services that will be required during this period, and has asked

CONDUCT OF THE STUDY
