operation that followed in the wake of GRANBY was Operation HAVEN for which three Hercules aircraft deployed to Incirlik, Turkey in April 1991 and dropped 500 tons of relief supplies to assist Kurdish refugees. They were subsequently joined by 10 Chinook helicopters which, from forward operating bases close to the Iraq/Turkey border, moved some 1700 tons of supplies forward and evacuated over 1000 sick and injured refugees. The Chinook force also played a vital role in the deployment and support of 3 Commando Brigade to set up refugee transit stations in Northern Iraq and to assist refugees to return to their homes.

Canberras deployed to Belize during February and March 1991 for survey work, and in June 1991 a Tristar enroute to the Falkland Islands was routed via Santiago in Chile to deliver relief supplies following a mud slide disaster in that country. Personnel of all three Services participating in Exercise LONG LOOK were flown to Australia in July 1991. The Air Transport Force continues periodic involvement in support of
in support of the UK's training contribution to Colombia. Finally, the Harrier fleet has been busy over the period giving displays in support of our wider defence interests in places as far apart Czechoslovakia, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, Mexico, Guatemala Chile; and Nimrod aircraft have again made training deployments to Oman (Exercise MAGIC ROUNDABOUT).

DEFENCE SALES
43. Overview.
Over the last 5 years the world defence export market has been worth, on average and in terms of value of new contracts signed, around US$52 billion a year. The Gulf war raised this to almost US$57 billion. Over the next five years the overall market is expected to decline but the Middle East will remain the most important area with real growth also expected in the Pacific Rim region. In 1990 UK defence exports were worth £2.7 billion (US$4.7 billion), giving a market share of a little under 10%; two thirds of this went to 62 countries OOA.

World Defence Exports. The Market is dominated by 4 suppliers - the US, the USSR, the UK and France. Over the past 5 years these four have accounted for 70% of defence equipment exports world-wide, and in 1990 secured 80% of the market. The US was particularly successful in 1990, mainly as
mainly as a result of sales generated by the Gulf war. By contrast, the USSR appears to have had a poor year
year with the loss of some of its key markets. The UK remained in third place over the 1986-1990 period.

With the easing in East/West tension, there is likely to be a global reduction in defence procurement resulting in increased competition. UK companies are likely to be at a disadvantage in this reduced market because of the policies of our main competitor governments who protect their
