36. RN OOA deployments in the years 1990 and 1991 are shown. at Annex K; the visits shown do not include the operational visits conducted during GRANBY. RN activity in 1991 has included visits to 74 countries 00A, excluding countries in Eastern Europe or the Soviet Union, and although GRANBY's force level requirements dominated the period, all 00A Directed Tasks and commitments were met. RN presence in the
the Gulf has been progressively reduced in line with the force levels of the other members of the coalition, and by the end of 1991 there were 3 DD/FF (with afloat support) deployed on ARMILLA, 2 of which are retained within the Gulf to meet the traditional tasks of ARMILLA together with the involvement in the force which is imposing sanctions in accordance with UNSCR 687. Unless there are unexpected operational developments, it is intended to reduce to 2 DD/FF, with afloat support, from February 1992.

In the Caribbean, the benefits to the DTS and
to many other island states of the WIGS' presence continue to be remarked upon widely. The last two years have seen a steady increase in the intensity of CN operations undertaken by RN warships here. From 1989's 34 ship-days of CN work done by WIGS in and around the DTS, off Belizean waters, and cooperating in joint CN operations with the USN and USCG, the RN's contribution in this field had risen to 98 ship days in the first 6 months alone of 1991. This increase in intensity has been achieved by giving a higher priority to CN work in WIGS' programme, by employing ships returning from the South Atlantic to UK via the Caribbean, and by making use of exercising units already in theatre - all principles which have the endorsement of the MOD Anti Drugs paper approved by Ministers in September The benefits of these additional CN ship-days to the RN are seen in improved Operational Effectiveness gained
gained from operating in the complex and asset rich environment of the Caribbean, which leads to improved efficacy against the increasingly sophisticated methods of the traffickers. This contribution is welcomed by the US authorities. We continue to encourage the region's French and Dutch authorities to permit joint participation in our CN activities by their naval and air assets.

The planned deployment in 1992 of a Task Group consisting of a CVS and 3 DD/FF with appropriate RFAS to the Far East will be the first major 00A deployment whose itinerary will be constrained by budget rather than time. In the South Atlantic, a submarine will continue to be at constant readiness to deploy if so required, but provided Ministerial
patrols forthcoming, periodic
only will consultation with CBFFI Staff. Following prolonged debate over the demise of HMS ENDURANCE, the Antarctic Ice Patrol Ship, a replacement has been procured on lease. The Dartmouth Training Squadron conducted a highly successful circumnavigation during 1990 visiting the Far East and North America before returning to the Atlantic through the Panama Canal.
