Taipei-Sydney direct flights were inaugurated by an

Australia Asia Airlines flight on 12 October, followed a few days later by Taiwan's Mandarin Airlines (various papers 13, 17

Following the passage by the DPP Congress on a platform calling for a plebiscite on the independence issue and adoption of the name "Republic of Taiwan", there were suggestions by some Kuomintang figures that legal action might be taken against the DPP under the law against sedition.

Premier Hau Pei-tsun rejected a motion on adopting the name "Republic of Taiwan", which the DPP sought to introduce in the Legislative Yuan on 22 October.

About 20,000 people were reported to have taken part in a demonstration in Kaohsiung on 25 October to call for the admission of Taiwan into the UN and for a plebiscite on the independence question.

According to a Hong Kong press report, Hau later agreed to hold talks with DPP leaders, out of a wish to lower the political temperature.

The Secretary-General of the World United Formosans for Independence, Wang Kang-lu, was arrested on 20 October, according to another Hong Kong press report.

The Kuomintang was said to have decided that the posts of Taiwan provincial governor and mayors of Taipei and Kaohsiung should be filled by direct election at a future date following the consideration of constitutional reforms by the new National Assembly, to be elected in December. The DPP claimed that the Kuomintang had gone back on a commitment to introduce direct elections to these posts in 1991 (Hong Kong Standard 30 Oct).

14 members of the moderate Formosa faction two less than previously numbered among the 31 Central Committee members elected at the DPP Congress 12 October. There are four Formosa faction members, including Hsu Hsin-liang (who was elected Party Chairman), among the 11 Central Standing Committee members elected.

The other seats are divided among the New Movement and Central factions (Liberty Times 13 Oct).

An opinion poll published in CT 13 Oct) showed broad opposition to the DPP's position on independence and only five per cent support for independence.

A draft revised version of the Copyright Law contains eight chapters and 117 articles, compared with the five chapters and 52 articles of the existing copyright law. It incorporates provisions of the US-Taiwan Copyright Agreement so as to conform with international copyright standards (CT 10 Oct).
